• May 21, 2007 · when i put it in first gear from nuetral mine clunks once.i had a problem last year it was making a shunk shunk shunk like a rub and a clunk all in one. the dealer was telling me it was the counter balance. it was on warranty so i just rode till oil leaked out the back side of the primary where the shaft from the trans enters the primary.turns out it was the trans main shaft bearing.

• The bushings in my suspension are starting to go. I only mention it because the clunks the suspension is starting to make are similar to the noise when I first shift to reverse. The shift noise is quite a bit louder than the suspension clunks though. I have not checked the condition or tightness of the engine or transmission mounts.

• A lot of the clunk comes from the clutch assembly having less mass and trying to spin down too much when you let off of the throttle completely. Honda made the clutch pack smaller and lighter than the previous wings. The lighter springs in it and less mass caused them to have to use engine oil pressure to assist the springs clamping force.

The car was used but I've had it for over 2 years and I shift just fine, there's no weird noises when I put it in gear but only when I start the car.

• After a normal start of my IO-520 with MT prop, the engine idled perfectly for about 10 seconds before a very brief but noticeable "clunk" was felt.
