Each photo should overlap the last by about 60%, but more overlap never hurts. Take additional photos showing the detailed areas of your object. MeshLab provides a variety of features to manipulate the scale, positioning and orientation of a 3D model, including basic transformation operations like translation/scaling/rotation, automatic re-centering and alignment to axis, geo-referencing with reference points, interactive manipulators for rotation/translation/scaling, and many others. The easiest approach is to setup the marker plate with the object on top of rotating platform and instead of moving the scanner, you can just rotate the platform. Make several scans from different angles to capture the object from all sides. Save each scan to PLY file.
You can use Mouse right button to rotate, Ctrl + Mouse right button to move and Shift + Mouse right button to scale Find a good alignment of an image with respect to the 3d model Select Filters > Camera > Image alignment: Mutual Information > Click on Get shot and Apply (Do this more than once for best results)
